About Donora, PA

Donora, situated along the Monongahela River, played a crucial role in the steel and manufacturing industries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town’s name is derived from the combination of William Donner and Nora Mellon, two influential figures involved in its establishment. Unfortunately, Donora gained infamy in 1948 when a weather inversion caused air pollution to become trapped, resulting in the “Donora Smog Disaster,” which claimed many lives and sparked awareness of the hazards of industrial pollution.
